New Message Series – Dealing With Doubt

We all experience doubt at some point in our lives.

But what should we do with our doubt? Can doubt inspire hope? Does faith mean never having any doubts?

We might experience doubt when following God requires unexpected sacrifice. Or we’ve been left confused, wondering why God does something seemingly out of line with His character.

In this two part series, we explore how to deal with doubt and discover that we don’t need all our questions answered to follow God.

I have just listened to Andy Stanley’s talk at North Point Community Church Sunday 26 September, where they were celebrating their 15th anniversary. I encourage you to listen to this message called “Together: Celebrating 15 Years” online at northpoint.org/messages. In his message, Andy refers to the fact that the latest stats show that North Point is now the 2nd largest church in the USA. That is amazing!

What is so humbling to me is that they started off not knowing whether their idea of “creating a church that unchurched people love to attend” would even work. They just knew they had to do it. Today thousands upon thousands of people have come into a relationship with Jesus Christ through attending North Point and their influence continues to grow worldwide. At the end of the message he speaks about what are they going to do now that they are so BIG!

Haven’t they reached their goal? Are they not big enough? His answer is – it’s got nothing to do with size. Being the 2nd biggest in the USA means nothing if they are NOT growing and continuing to reach people with the amazing message of Jesus. Where God has brought them to, has provided them with more influence and more responsibility to share what they have, so they are going to continue to build new churches, not just in the USA, but across the globe, because it is their heart not so much to be BIG, but to grow and continue to provide places where unchurched people love to attend.

My dear friends at Southpoint, we are in this TOGETHER! We might become the 2nd largest church in SA, I don’t know, but that is not our aim. Our aim is to “lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ” by creating a church that unchurched people love to attend. My friends, this is happening now. Don’t miss it. It’s here!

Every week we see new people. Every month we are growing! I took a walk around on Sunday and was introduced to many people I had not met and did not know their names! I regret that but also LOVE it. Unchurched people want to attend Southpoint! Listen to the words of a person who has hardly missed a Sunday since she started attending 9 months ago: “if you had said to me a year ago that one year from now you will be looking forward to attending church every week – I would have thought you were insane!”

She is just one of many who have been invited to Southpoint and their first impression is: “I want to come back!” Well done all of you who are “Investing and Inviting” your friends, who are giving generously to the church, who are serving faithfully every Sunday to make our great environments great and who are praying faithfully.

I am humbled to be your partner and a part of what God is doing in the world today.

It’s never too late

One of my best moments on Sunday was when a lady who has only recently begun attending Southpoint Church, came up to thank me for the sandwiches we served before the Guest Services Training event. She is very excited about getting involved in serving and also expressed her appreciation at being able to do so! She specifically wanted to tell me how much she enjoys the music that our band plays every week. You see, I had told a story in the training time about another 60+ lady who has attended and served at our church for a long time. She didn’t particularly enjoy the music until God dramatically worked to show her that the music was not about her, but about the younger friends she invited who came and ended up loving the music. So my new friend wanted me to know that even though she was in her 60s she didn’t think it was possible to sing the praises of God too loudly! And that watching the young 20 somethings on stage playing their hearts out and worshipping God was an inspiration to her. My favourite was when she said, “I’ve been away from the Lord for a long time – well over 30 years, but I’ve realized that it is never too late to come back to the Lord!”

When I sent the above to confirm the facts and get permission to share it, my friend said I must also include this:

Thanks for the story of ‘me’, but will appreciate it if you also make mention of the little guys, who, two weeks back were in the very front row of the church singing their hearts out and of the one in particular who was ‘keeping time with the drummer’. He was so in the ‘thick of it’, it touched me deeply enough to bring tears to my eyes. These little guys could easily have been wishing they were outside somewhere kicking a ball around, or participating in some other form of sport rather than attending church. If this indeed was their secret wish, then it certainly did not manifest itself in their body language. In this modern day and age with its attendant distractions and temptations, it is so heartening to observe the joy our young people derive from attending church.

I am praising God because He can bring healing and hope to individuals of any age. I am so privileged to be able to serve with Him with such a great team of staff and volunteers at Southpoint Church.

Description of job:

As one of the Early Bird breakfast ladies it’s my job to have fresh hot coffee and some breakfast ready for the guys and girls that have help to make the environment what it is on a Sunday. It’s a small way to say thanks to them, especially seeing some of them are up from 5:30 am. I also then take them some snacks just before the service starts to refuel their tummies.

06:30	Arrive and set up	If I’m doing the breakfast I arrive and start fetching the water for the coffee. We don’t have a sink or tap close by so we commute to the toilets. We just remind ourselves that its good exercise.
07:45	Team arrives	About 30 hungry volunteers arrive to devour the food and coffee.
8:30	We have a pray session.	We pray about the service that many people will be blessed and grow in their relationship with God.
9:30	Pack up

Description of job:

Communicate the Bible story of KIDstuf in a fun and interesting way using different characters. This month I am Private Detective Sam Shovel who will help you keep digging if you are in a hole you can’t get out of, and have been hired by Mary and Martha to investigate the mysterious death of their brother, Lazarus.

Time	What	Description or additional Notes
07:30	Meet for practice	Meet with the other actors in The Word and run through our script a few times and try come up with some character interactions while on stage. Since we don’t have time to practice during the week this is really the first practice we have.
08:00	Breakfast	We all sit down and relax for a bit while we grab something small to eat and keep us going through the morning.
08:15	Microphone collection	Collect my microphone and make sure it is working correctly and fits properly.
08:30	Briefing and prayer	We gather as a group and pray for all the different aspects of the show. We also have a briefing on the mornings activities and any specific stage requirements etc.
08:45	Sound check	The sound guys check your input and output volume to make sure you won’t blast anyone deaf during the show.
08:50	Run-through	Basically like a dress rehearsal. We run through the show from beginning to end. We often practice a few small items again at the end to make sure we get it right later.
10:00	Silence on stage	Find a spot to either practice again or relax before the show begins.
10:15	Backstage	Find a spot to sit backstage to watch the show on a TV waiting for your segment to start.
10:30	Show begins	Obviously this is where the nerves start to take over.
±10:55	Word Segment	Time to shine. The segment begins and pray you remember your lines.
11:15	Show ends	The show draws to a close unless Tom starts rambling or does something off the wall.

Description of job:

I lead a team that films and edits all the non North Point Community Church video elements (you know the ones without American voices). We are currently trying to stream line this process in order to be ahead in the planning and to not hand in the video content to be displayed on the day it is displayed.

At the moment I am mostly busy putting the 10B4 together for Sundays – something I want to hand over to young and talented individual – keen?

On a Sunday the Video team that I am part of puts up the Screen, Projector, helps with the lights, camera, Creche TV. At the moment it is a juggle with my son Stephen, ooo. It is my dream to do live video up on the screen with words over layered and lead crew involved in this Visual DJ’ing for Church – Something like Buckhead Church , check it.

06:30	Meet and Pray and plan	We all get together and Mathew Hastings gives us the low down and plan going forward so that we can setup effectively and efficiently.
06:40	Get our equipment	Besides the Camera, tripod and laptop that I bring the equipment is picked up and placed by the production team at 06:00. The set up is as follows: Screen Projector and cable Help with Lights CG Computer Camera Creche
08:00	Run through	Screen, Projector, Lights and the CG Computer all need to have been setup and tested by this time so that the run through can commence without hic-up. Although this time may be brought forward when we have two services.I also take of from my Wife Kathy to look after Stephen – until he is old enough to go to Building Blocks (Waumba Land)
30 mins b4 service	Start up feed	Make sure the camera is on and the feed is being sent to the relevant outputs. And is aimed at the screen.
10–5 mins b4 service	Man the camera	The 10B4 will start and the camera person needs to be at the camera.
End of Services	Switch off Projector	The Projector needs to cool down and needs to be switched off if there is no need to keep content on the screen
11:30	Take a break	I take the opportunity to have some coffee, or maybe not. But definitely to mingle. I really should look out for new people.
11:45	Pack up	Kathy takes over Stephen so I can help pack up. Creche Camera Projector and cable Help with Lights Screen
12:30	Finish	The goal is to finish before this
